There's no better time then now, with cold weather upon us, to curl up and turn on a good documentary (or 5). Here's our top 5 list for food waste documentaries.
This documentary, featuring Anthony Bourdain called Wasted! The Story of Food Waste just came out this month! It's only playing in San Francisco so you can rent it online here. Don't wanna buy it? Well, you can listen to the interview with the filmmaker here. While most food waste documentaries may talk about pending doom, this one actually focuses on how innovative and creative top chefs can be in the kitchen using scraps and leftovers. (Ok there is some depressing stuff, but you can't get away from it).
Just Eat it! A Food Waste Story can be watched for free here (yay!) A Vancouver couple decides to eat only rescued food for 6 months which means they forego restaurant meals and even grocery shopping. This should be interesting!
Dive! Living Off America's Waste talks about "dumpster diving" which means literally diving into dumpsters to find food. This film follows the filmmakers as they dive into dumpsters near grocery stores where they find thousands of dollars worth of edible food. You can watch the full movie here.
No Impact Man follows a man, his wife and daughter on their one year journey to create absolutely no "impact" on the environment. This goes beyond food but it's still quite fascinating to see the struggle of having completely zero impact. It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, busses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage. Phew! You can watch it for free here.
Honourable Mention: Expired? Food Waste in America (short film - no really, like 5 minutes long). This is SUCH a huge issue and the more we can put awareness on it, the more it can change the way people buy and consume food.
That's our list! Happy Watching. Tell us, which one was the most impactful for you? Do you recommend any others that we should watch?
